Plant Science Facilities

Excellent laboratory and field facilities, high-tech classrooms, and computer facilities support the Plant Science Department. They include:

Floriculture Greenhouses and Display Gardens
Six greenhouses with about 17,000 square feet available for teaching, research and production.  Plant sales and self-guided greenhouse tours are available.

Display Gardens:  CURRENTLY CLOSED AND BEING RENOVATED.
Seasonal:  Dawn to dusk.
Take a leisurely stroll through the display gardens on the
south side of the greenhouses.

Plant Science Research and Education Facility

Located 8/10s of a mile from campus (from the light at South Eagleville Rd.) at 1015A Agronomy Road.  Drive to the end of the road and through the gate. 

This facility has a classroom, three greenhouses totaling 5500 sq. ft., and approximately 50 acres devoted to small plot research and teaching projects in plant and soil science. Over twenty faculty and their graduate students use this facility for their research and teaching efforts. During the school year, classes from the Department of Plant Science as well as the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture, the Department of Natural Resources, and the College of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology meet here to obtain hands-on training in both the scientific and practical aspects of agriculture.


Ratcliffe Hicks/C.R Burr Teaching Nursery

Located 8/10s of a mile from campus (from the light at South Eagleville Rd.) at 1015A Agronomy Road.  Drive to the end of the road and through the gate. 


Five-acre nursery operation with greenhouses, hoop houses, capillary beds and field plots for both container and field production of nursery crops.


University Campus/Arboretum
Extensive grounds with an impressive collection of woody plant materials used in teaching.

Landscape Computer Aided Design Laboratory
Microcomputer laboratory set up with AutoCAD and LANDCADD for classroom and individual use.

Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory

Located at 1390 Storrs Road.


Biotechnology Laboratory The Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory building (ABL) is adjacent to the George White building and houses facultyand graduate students from the Department of Animal Science. This state-of-the-art facility provides undergraduate students with the opportunity for research experiences as Independent Studies, or as paid employees within different laboratories.


Turfgrass Disease Diagnostic Center
Located within the W.B. Young building at 1376 Storrs Rd., the Turfgrass Disease Diagnostic Center services commercial turfgrass managers throughout the country. Established in 2005, the diagnostic center’s primary goal is to provide rapid and accurate analysis of biotic and abiotic turfgrass problems on golf courses, athletic fields and other highly maintained turfgrass areas.


Home and Garden Center
Located in the Ratcliffe Hicks building at 1376 Storrs Rd., the H&G Center provides a wealth of information for homeowners throughout the state of Connecticut.  Free parking next to the Ratcliffe Hicks building.

Soil Nutrient Analysis Laboratory
Located at the Depot Campus, 6 Sherman Place, Union Cottage, Mansfield. 

The primary purpose of the laboratory is to provide lime and fertilizer recommendations for commercial agriculturalists and home owners. We also analyze research samples for scientists in the Department of Plant Science and the Department of Natural Resources. The laboratory analyzes about 17,000 soil samples annually.
