The College’s Plant Science Research and Education Facility in Storrs is the site of the oldest continually operating official National Weather Service (NWS) station in Connecticut and the second oldest in New England.

In the photo at right, Stephen Olsen, manager of the Plant Science Research and Education Facility, is presented with a 20-Year Length of Service Award by Kimberly Buttrick of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the station’s administrator. Since starting at UConn in May 1988, Olsen has been responsible for the daily record taking and maintenance of the station.

The Storrs Cooperative Observer site, which has recorded weather data since June 1, 1888, is part of the United States Historical Climatology Network, a data set of daily and monthly records of basic meteorological variables from more than one thousand observing stations across the forty-eight contiguous United States.
