Children love playing outside, especially on playground equipment. As adults we see the potential dangers, but children only see fun! Providers should teach children how to play safely. Involve the children in making the rules for appropriate playground behavior. Take the children outside and encourage them to help you make the rules. Children will remember the importance of rules when they have taken part in the decision making process. Discuss the rules with the children, tell them what the consequences will be if they do not obey playground rules. As a provider, enforce the rules and explain their importance. Let the children know the rules are for their protection and to keep them safe.
Here are some rules to teach children about playground safety:
1. Do not run, push, shove, or fight while near or on equipment.
2. Take turns while on equipment.
3. Do not swing empty seats or twist swing chairs.
4. Sit properly on equipment and do not overcrowd.
5. Do not climb up slides, use the ladder.
6. Ask adults for help if there is a problem on the playground.
If you allow the children to help make the rules, they will learn the importance of each rule. It is important to do weekly safety checks to check for potential hazards. As a provider, it is your job to protect children. Make playgrounds a fun, but safe place for a child.
