It is the goal of the Department of Animal Science to provide each student with a challenging and well-rounded education that includes the latest in applying scientific concepts to reproduction, genetics, nutrition, food products and physiological controls in livestock health and management. This is accomplished by technical instruction in classrooms and in modern laboratories supported by "hands-on" work with horses, dairy and beef cattle, swine, sheep, poultry, laboratory and companion animals, and their products.

Formal and informal opportunities are provided to every student to obtain these and other skills. Both the A.A.S. and B.S. programs offer over 30 Animal Science courses for students to design a unique educational experience. Departmental academic advisors help students in the development of a suitable program. Students may work with livestock, horses and poultry on campus, perform independent research with faculty in a laboratory, or participate in an internship anywhere in the world.

Participation in the Honors Program, Degree with Distinction and the University Scholar programs are encouraged for all qualified students. Visit with the Animal Science Honors advisor for details.
