Background:

Jenifer Nadeau received an AAS in Agricultural Science from the State University of New York at Morrisville College in 1993. She received a BS in Animal Science - Equine Option from the University of Kentucky in 1995. Then she received her MS in Comparative and Experimental Medicine in 1997 and completed her PhD in Animal Science in 2001 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She joined the UConn Animal Science Department in August, 2001. She has worked with horses since the age of 8. Her experience includes working at a trail riding facility, manager of a hunter/jumper facility, manager of a veterinarian's horse and sheep farm, working as a night watch at a historic Thouroughbred breeding farm, driving and training draft horses, and working with therapeutic riding programs.

Courses Taught:

ANSC 2111

Principles of Nutrition and Feeding of Livestock

Research Interests:

My goal is to improve equine health through evaluation of current practices and the development of new practices, leading to sound equine health management programs for horse owners to utilize. The specific aims of my research are to:

1)      Evaluate the effects of the barn environment on respiratory health in horses and humans by identifying major irritants of the barn environment and how to eliminate or reduce them

2)      Utilize DNA techniques to develop alternative treatments for common horse health problems and reduce bacterial resistance

3)      Evaluate the incidence of gastric ulcer disease in horses and attempt to modify its incidence through dietary intervention

4)      Evaluate the incidence of insulin resistance, identify causative agents and develop dietary intervention
