UCONN HORSE RIDING PRACTICUM

The University’s Animal Science Department offers a self-improvement, non-credit, extracurricular horse riding program entitled “Horse Practicum”. Students enrolled in the practicum program can participate in riding lessons and in the care and management of UConn horses. The Practicum is open to all students enrolled at the University. Although priority for riding is given to Animal Science majors, all students are welcome on a space available basis.

Practicum students may choose from Huntseat, Western, Dressage, Saddleseat (by arrangement), and Polo. Beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate I & II and advanced classes are offered.

Students must attend the first Horse Practicum meeting held at the beginning of the semester. Students will also have the opportunity at the first meeting to sign up for the Adopt A Horse to Care For program. Each semester this program allows students to adopt a horse to clip, bathe, groom, and pull manes, etc.

The UConn Intercollegiate Equestrian Team members are chosen from the Horse Practicum Huntseat lessons. As team members, students can participate in regional contests held at various New England colleges. Success on the regional level allows team members to advance to national intercollegiate competitions. For more information on the practicum classes (Huntseat, Dressage, Western) please email equestrian@uconn.edu and Polo classes email Dr. Jim Dinger or phone (860) 486-3376.

How do I Sign Up?? At the beginning of each semester a Horse Practicum sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board outside of the Animal Science Department main office - Room 107 so that students can register on a first come, first served basis. Registration begins the first day of the second week of classes. Lessons begin approximately the third week of the semester. Spring 2009 Practicum Schedule
