Amy and Her "Sisters"

Amy (second from right in picture) was the first bovine born as the result of cloning a somatic cell obtained from an adult cow. She and her three "sisters" pictured here are genetically identical, like identical twins (and exactly the same as their "mother"). Fibroblast cells were obtained from the donor cow's skin, manipulated to induce division and transfered into enucleated egg cells. The cloned cells were then transplanted into several different "recipient" cows, which carried the developing embyros through a normal gestation, about 280 days in cattle. As shown here, they are around 18 months of age. Read more about how these cows were produced by Animal Science faculty member Jerry Yang and his coworkers here.
