Michael Darre clearly stands out as an exemplary teacher. While he
teaches several courses and receives great student evaluations, he also
devotes many evening and weekend hours to student learning and
enhances the broader teaching mission of the Department and College.
Darre has served as mentor for undergraduates involved in a variety of projects at both the two- and four-year levels and has also assisted high school students and 4-H youth with projects in avian embryology. He goes out of his way to involve students in the poultry barns, the laboratory, or at the computer. Under his leadership and guidance the University of Connecticut Poultry Science Club has been enjoying unprecedented success in the last few years. During the past year several club members judged 4-H poultry shows, processed turkeys as a fund-raiser, and assisted the Connecticut Poultry Association at the Connecticut Ag Expo. Each January he drives club members to Atlanta on their annual trip to attend the International Poultry Exposition. Just over a year ago the Poultry Science Club won the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Programs and Services to the Community Over a Five-Year Period.
In addition to direct teaching responsibilities, Darre has provided leadership in several areas critical to the teaching mission of the Animal Science Department. He has been an effective chairman of the department's Courses and Curriculum Committee for many years and provided leadership in the development of the Animal Science Handbook, a publication that provides guidance to undergraduate majors. He is also the department’s contact for undergraduate internship programs.
